Measurement technique overview

Steps include capturing seismograph images, adding a scale to the left of the page, and then converting it into a black and white image.


Counting pixels
The next step is to count the individual pixels that are white in each line. To do this we utilize a program called ImageJ available from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Yes there are smaller programs that can be used, however, this program from the NIH is freely available and pretty easy to use.


Data conditioning
The data conditioning step involves mathematically inverting the Mean value from ImageJ to represent just the black pixels associated with the line being analyzed. It subtracts a baseline value that represents color already present in the graph and a typical line without any tremor.

Subjective attribute
The final step is to ascribe a quality score to the data. Not all data from a seismograph is "clean". When there is an earthquake or very large tremors, there may be significant color that bleeds into other lines which can effect values. Further sometimes the baseline of shifts.
